Texas RB coach Tashard Choice hints at decision on job status amid NFL speculation
Tashard Choice seemed to hint Sunday evening that he isn’t leaving his job at Texas any time soon. The Longhorns running backs coach interviewed for the same job with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, causing many to wonder whether he would leave after three seasons in Austin.
However, Choice made a post on X, formerly Twitter, that implied that might not be the case. He posted a photo of his newborn daughter, who had her hand in the Hook ’em Horns sign along with the caption, “Amya says Hook Em.”
With Choice on staff the past two seasons, Texas advanced to the College Football Playoff. This past year, they won their first two games to advance to the semifinals before falling against eventual national champion Ohio State.
The Longhorns ranked 25th in the country in rushing yards per game under choice in 2023, but took a step back to 71st this past season. Some of that can be attributed to injury, as CJ Baxter went down before the season began and the running backs were banged up all year.
Choice was drafted to the Cowboys in 2008 as a running back out of Georgia Tech. He played the first three years of his career in Dallas before being waived and signing with Washington midway through his fourth year.

Choice also previously worked for the Cowboys as coaching intern in 2016, so his ties to the organization made it seem like it could potentially be a good fit. But based on his latest post, it doesn’t seem like it was meant to be.
Prior to joining Texas, Tashard Choice was the running backs coach at his alma mater of Georgia Tech (2019-21) and before that North Texas (2018).
If Choice does come back, he’ll get another chance to work with Baxter, who was the No. 1 running back in the 2023 class. He rushed for 659 yards and five touchdowns as a true freshman and will look to bounce back from last year’s injury.
Choice has already choiced Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson, helping both to NFL careers. The 40-year-old has already proven himself a valuable assett during his short time in the coaching profession and Texas fans are certainly glad to have him back.
