Texas AFI 5

After a bit of a slow start to the 2025 cycle, Texas is heating up on the recruiting trail as August rolls on.

On Wednesday, the Longhorns landed their first five-star commitment of the class when Sachse (Texas) wide receiver Kaliq Lockett pledged to Texas over LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M and others.

His addition is not only a big one for the future of the ‘Horns wide receiver room, but it gave them a big bump in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings as well.

Sitting at No. 15 nationally coming into the day, Texas jumped over Oklahoma, Michigan, Miami and Notre Dame to No. 11 with Lockett.

“It really came down to putting on for my home state and belief in what Coach Sark and Coach (Chris) Jackson have in store for me,” Lockett told On3’s Steve Wiltfong of his commitment. “I’m going to have to do all the work. But I know if I do the work, if I compete, buy in, learn the playbook, get good grades and stay out of trouble, I know I’ll see the field freshman year and I know I’ll be successful.”

Lockett becomes the fourth top-100 commit this cycle for Sarkisian and Co., joining Texarkana (Texas) Pleasant Grove four-star athlete Lance Jackson, Houston Alief Hastings four-star EDGE Smith Orogbo and Dallas Skyline four-star linebacker Elijah Barnes.

Of their 17 total commitments, 12 (70%) hail from the Lone Star State.

Lockett also gives the Longhorns 11 blue-chip pledges in the cycle, joining the aforementioned three players, as well as four-star quarterback K.J. Lacey, On3 top-100 tight end Nick Townsend, the nation’s No. 7 CB Kade Phillips, four-star running backs James Simon and Rickey Stewart Jr., defensive lineman Josiah Sharma and Georgia-based tight end Emaree Winston.
