Texas star Madison Booker named SEC women's basketball Player of the Year

On Tuesday, Texas sophomore Madison Booker was named the SEC Player of the Year. Booker averaged 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game during the regular season while shooting 46.4% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc.
Booker’s statistics translated to success for the Longhorns. In their first season in the SEC, the Longhorns clinched a share of the regular season conference title, tying South Carolina with a 15-1 record in conference play.
Texas faced off against South Carolina twice during the regular season, splitting the series. However, Texas got the last laugh, defeating the Gamecocks in their second meeting. In the 66-62 win, Madison Booker tallied a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Now, the star forward will have a chance to put on a show in the Big Dance. In ESPN analyst Charlie Creme’s latest bracketology, he projected Texas as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.
Madison Booker wasn’t the only player who received some new hardware on Tuesday. Kentucky took home two awards, with forward Clara Strack being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and transfer guard Georgia Amoore receiving the Newcomer of the Year Award.
Of course, South Carolina also reeled in an honor. Gamecocks guard Milaysia Fulwiley was named the SEC Sixth-Woman of the Year. Lastly, Vanderbilt star Mikayla Blakes hauled in the SEC Freshman of the Year Award.
With so many talented players across the league, there should be no shortage of sparks in the SEC Tournament this week. Look below to see the complete conference tournament schedule.
