While Iowa State–Texas may not be a rivalry, there have certainly been words exchanged between the two programs over the last few years. And with the perceived final matchup taking place in Ames on Saturday, both teams want to end the series on a positive note. Both are still in the Big 12 Championship race and a win would go a long way toward reaching Arlington.
Iowa State offensive lineman Jarrod Hufford is pretty confident in his team’s chances, saying they plan on giving Texas a nice gift before departing for the SEC.
“It’s definitely going to be one heck of a farewell present,” Hufford said. “They are going to come in here on senior night in the dark. I don’t think they really know what is going to be coming for them. I think they’ll have to come out and figure it out. When it comes night games, especially against Texas — we’ve beaten them 4 out of the last 5 times they’ve been here. So, they don’t have a good record here… We definitely want to send them off to the SEC with a loss on our end.”
Hufford lines up at left guard for Iowa State, having the job of protecting young quarterback Rocco Becht and getting the ground game going. He will have a tough challenge against the Texas defensive tackles, who some might argue is the best duo in the country. T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy have been unblockable all season.
Sweat is likely to line up against Hufford on Saturday and the official Texas Football X account appears to have made the Iowa State OL know he is in for a long day.

Hufford is right about Texas struggling in Ames in recent times, losing three out of the last four dating back to the 2015 season. On3’s Andy Staples and J.D. PicKell believe the Jack-Trice Stadium crowd will be a great one, potentially giving Iowa State a leg up in the contest.
As if there was not enough on the line Saturday night, there will now be a specific matchup we can look for. Hufford vs. Sweat and to an extent, Murphy as well. He saw Hufford’s comments as well and made his thoughts known.
Jarrod Hufford further explains disdain for Texas
Hufford had some bigger-picture thoughts on the Texas program as well. He explained the disdain for the Longhorns, saying it’s at the same level as the in-state rivalry against Iowa. Iowa State is hoping Texas heads back to Austin with a nice ego check.
“Ever since I got here, it was Iowa and Texas,” Hufford said. “That was kind of the thing. The ‘Horns Down’ all the time. That program, much like Oklahoma, they get all the 5-star recruits and have all the nicest stuff in the world and they just think they don’t stink. They’re just humans and that’s how I see them. They’re people that have such a high ego that need to be checked.”
