Urban Meyer believes Texas should have beaten Alabama in 2022

There are few programs in college football that have the resources to match the Texas Longhorns. Because of that, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer thinks that the Longhorns are on the verge of breaking through on the field.

During Urban’s Take with Tim May, Meyer broke down what he likes about Texas, including the incredibly talented roster in place there.

“I’ve got Texas — at some point Texas, too good of a place,” Urban Meyer said. “The coach, [Steve] Sarkisian is too good of a coach. They are loaded. There’s a five-star athlete at every position on offense at Texas.”

In 2022, the Longhorns played one of the marquee non-conference games of the season. That was against Alabama and Texas nearly came up with the win in that game. Many people thought Texas should have won that game, including Urban Meyer.

“I watched them against Alabama last year. They should have won that game. If Quinn Ewers doesn’t go down, I believe Texas beats Alabama and the whole 2022 is completely different.”

Luckily, for Texas, the Longhorns will have a chance to avenge that loss in the non-conference in 2023. In Week 2, Texas is going to travel to Tuscaloosa for the return trip of a home and home with Alabama. It won’t be easy, but a win could set the tone for the rest of what will be an important season for the Longhorns.

As Meyer pointed out, one of the big reasons why Texas lost that game was because Quinn Ewers went down with an injury. Had he stayed healthy, it’s hard to say what might have happened. Hopefully, injuries don’t have that same type of impact on the game in 2023.

Urban Meyer praised Texas’ roster

This Spring, Urban Meyer praised the raw talent of the roster at Texas. He explained that he thinks it’s the most talented roster in all of college football and would have a hard time arguing for another team to have more talent.

“I think Texas, you didn’t mention them, but, you know, don’t sleep on Texas this year,” Meyer said. “Man for man, roster against roster, it’s hard to say Texas doesn’t have the best roster in college football right now.”

It’s pretty difficult to argue that Texas is back until the Longhorns consistently win on the field. However, it’s also hard not to be excited about the team going into the 2023 season.
