Urban Meyer crowns Texas as 'the best team in the country'
Following the Longhorns’ win in Tuscaloosa over Alabama, there is a lot of excitement that Texas is finally back. One person who is certainly high on Texas after the win is former coach Urban Meyer.
As Meyer explained during Urban’s Take with Tim May, he thinks that the Longhorns have proven that they’re the best team in the country.
“They’re the best team in the country,” Meyer said. “They’re a team that in the spring we have a researcher, Adam, that I’m very close with that we talk throughout the year and I just started in the offseason reading about these rosters, and I actually still talk to Mark Pantoni, the recruiting guy at Ohio State. I just wanted to be educated on what we’re talking about. It’s amazing, some guys pick their final four and I remember last year some people picking their final four on other networks and you go, ‘Really?'”
Meyer explained that a lot of his offseason research ended up going into Texas and he walked away impressed. The win over Alabama only confirmed that to Meyer.
“So, I just wanted to make sure we do a good job and I started reading up on this Texas outfit and I saw the firsthand last year, a year ago against Alabama, and it’s too good of a place to — at some point that rock’s got to break. It makes no sense. It’s too good of coaches, too good a place. Obviously, players all over the place in the state of Texas, and then you start looking at this roster and like, wait a minute, these guys are loaded, and they were really well coached. They beat Alabama because it was one of the few games I really got to watch. I mean, Alabama tried to keep it close but it really wasn’t close.”
Tim May brought up both the quarterback position and defensive line unit as standing out to him in the win and Urban Meyer reemphasized his point that Texas is college football’s best team.
“Top to bottom, I think Texas is the best team in the country. I thought that going into the season if they stayed healthy and if they just kind of figured out things, you know, Texas, you can’t go back and say Texas hasn’t had players. That’s nonsense. There was something wrong and whatever was wrong seems to be figured out.”

The question, then, is why aren’t the Longhorns the top ranked team in the country if they’re so good on paper and they also have the best individual win in the country?
“I think Georgia is the man until you beat the man. That’s your back-to-back national champion. I remember that happened to us when we won a national title, we were probably ranked higher than we should have been for a while. So, I don’t follow all that closely because the rankings right now don’t matter, but I just think you’re the man until you get beat by the man and Georgia has not lost. The Wolverines are right up there too,” Meyer said.
“No one asked me my vote, but my vote would be Texas number one.”
Jaylan Ford on how Texas can stay focused
Star Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford knows the Longhorns need to stay focused on the task at hand following a win over Alabama.
“It was just a whole bunch of facts about the first time we’ve been in the top five in some years, or however long. And then it was talking about like, we were the first to beat Saban by double digits and all those, you know, the little stats, whatever. And then just, I was on Twitter and I just saw a lot of hype about the game. And my biggest thing was just like, it’s almost Monday now, so like for us as players, we are taught or it’s kind of instilled in us to, you know, once Sunday hits or once Monday hits, you really got to flip the switch and focus on the next opponent,” Ford said.
“The game is behind you now so it’s like, you know, what you did, it didn’t really matter. You got to go out there and win again. So for us … that’s where the rap was, just don’t really believe the hype and get complacent kind of deal. There’s still a lot (that we have) to go out there and achieve, it’s still a long season. And we gotta keep pushing and keep striving to be better.”
