WATCH: Walk-off wild pitch sends Texas past Texas Tech
Texas baseball picked up a big series win against Texas Tech on Saturday, and the Longhorns did it in thrilling fashion. A walk-off wild pitch sent them to victory.
The sequence leading up to the play was interesting. It started with a double from Porter Brown, and he advanced to third base on a balk by Texas Tech pitcher Andrew Devine. Then, Devine’s pitch got past catcher Dylan Maxcey, allowing Brown to score and give the Longhorns the 6-5 victory.
With the win, Texas won the three-game series and has a chance to sweep the Red Raiders on Sunday.
The Longhorns are now 17-7 this season — including a 2-0 record in Big 12 play — and in the midst of a 13-game winning streak entering the final game of the series against Texas Tech. All of those wins have come at home, starting with a game against Sam Houston State March 7.
It’s made for a busy two weeks for David Pierce and the Longhorns, and he said he sees a different mentality from his players over this stretch. Playing at home helps, but he thinks his group has hit a groove — especially on offense — to help propel them into Big 12 play.

“I think, first of all, it’s getting back home and building some confidence and playing well,” Pierce said. “If we play well, then potentially, we have good results. We’ve done that. With that comes a lot of confidence. We’ve been able to make some really good adjustments when you look at communication on the field pre-pitch and with the ball in play. Coordination of each other, coordination of understanding each other’s range and just playing overall better defense. We’ve done a great job attacking the strike zone or the most part, and when we haven’t, we’ve gotten burned on it. Those are always lessons.
“But I think more than anything, it’s just this team learning how to win and build their own identity. Starting to see some flow in our offense where guys are doing certain things. Guys that bunt can bunt, guys that can run, run. So just kind of getting a balance in our offense and then trying to get our staff to work around basically our five best arms and utilize guys in spots around those five guys.”
Texas will close out the series against Texas Tech on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT. That will also mark the end of the long homestand.
