WATCH: 4-star WR, Texas commit Johntay Cook II catches touchdown in close coverage
DeSoto (Texas) four-star wide receiver Johntay Cook II is one of the top wideouts in the 2023 cycle. He is ranked as the No. 38 overall prospect and No. 7 wide receiver in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
The Texas commit will soon be headed to Austin as part of one of the nation’s best recruiting classes. But until then, he is chasing a state championship in his final high school football season.
In a scrimmage vs. Lancaster, Cook II showcased the skills that made him one of the best players in the country by notching multiple touchdowns. On one of them, he rose above a defender in close coverage for a toe-tapping score on the sideline.
Cook is one of the leaders of Texas’ 2023 class
A 5-foot-11, 171 pound wide receiver, Cook II has been committed to Texas since June 29. His decision came less than a week after New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Arch Manning pledged to the Longhorns.
Cook II is currently the third-highest-ranked prospect in Texas’ 2023 class behind Manning and New Iberia (La.) Westgate five-star safety Derek Williams. He has been trying to convince prospects to join the Longhorns’ group.

“I’m just trying to recruit all my boys,” Cook II told On3’s Gerry Hamilton in July. “All the top dawgs. All the guys that are going to get after it. Keep all the top guys in Texas. I mean, why not?”
Cook II attended the Longhorns’ recent BBQ/Pool Party last month. He has also been flourishing on the camp circuit. On3’s Sam Spiegelman named Cook “Best route-runner” in his summer superlatives.
“Johntay Cook II has been a standout performer from event to event ranging from OT7 to the Future 50, and in the process has established himself as one of, if not, the best route-runners in the country,” Spiegelman wrote. “The Texas commitment out of DeSoto (Texas) is effortless in and out of his breaks and instantly accelerates to gain separation. Cook’s going to be a fun piece for Steve Sarkisian to work with.”
