The No. 6 seed Texas Longhorns are still dancing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Following his team’s big 81-73 win over the No. 11 seed Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday, Longhorns head coach Chris Beard felt like dancing in the locker room. And why wouldn’t he? After all, his team was almost universally picked to get upset by the red-hot Virginia Tech Hokies.

Check out Beard dancing with his team following the win.

Beard was brought to Texas to bring more success in the NCAA Tournament and he took a step in the right direction on Friday. Virginia Tech was one of the hottest teams in the country. They came into the matchup winning 13 of their last 15 games, including an ACC Tournament crown in which they stunned the Duke Blue Devils, 82-67.

Thanks to some blistering hot shooting, the Longhorns pulled away in the second half of Friday night’s matchup with Virginia Tech. Texas limited the Hokies’ sharpshooter, Hunter Cattoor to just 12 points. He only made one of three shots from beyond-the-arc. The Hokies only made 4-of-12 three-point attempts (33.3 percent), whereas Texas drilled 10-of-19 threes (52.6 percent). The Longhorns had five players score in double-digits in the big win. Andrew Jones was blistering hot, pouring in 21 points, while connecting on 5-of-7 three-pointers. The senior guard seemed like a man on a mission and his huge performance was a big reason Texas advanced to the Round of 32.

Texas shot a simmering hot 64 percent from the floor in the second half. The NCAA tournament win for the Longhorns was their first win in the tournament since 2014.

Beard was hired at Texas due to his excellent resume

Chris Beard won the 2018-2019 Associated Press National Coach of the Year after guiding the Texas Tech Red Raiders to an appearance in the 2019 National Championship game. The Red Raiders lost that game, 85-77 in overtime to the Virginia Cavaliers, but it was a remarkably hard-fought contest by both teams. In 2018, Beard also guided the Red Raiders to the first Elite Eight appearance in school history. His impressive 9-3 record in the NCAA Tournament while he was at Texas Tech, was a huge reason why the Longhorns lured him to Austin.

The Longhorns will face the No. 3 seed Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday. That winner of that game will advance to the Sweet 16.
