Xavier Worthy has continued his strong season for the Texas Longhorns. In Saturday’s game against West Virginia, Worthy broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown pass from Texas quarterback Hudson Card. The score was an important one, as it cut West Virginia’s lead to 21-17.

Worthy’s touchdown was his 12th of the season. He was able to beat the defenders on a streak, and Card made a beautiful throw leading him up the field for the Texas touchdown.

Entering the game, Worthy had an impressive 49 receptions, 831 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has averaged 17 yards per reception this season. His 12th touchdown for Texas was his fifth reception of the day, and he had 80 receiving yards at the time of the score.

West Virginia scored on their next possession, bringing their lead back to 11.

The Card, Worthy touchdown connection sparked the Texas passing offense

Casey Thompson got the start at quarterback for Texas, but he struggled immensely. Thompson completed just four of his 12 passes for 29 yards before being pulled for Card. Card has looked much better at the helm, leading Texas down the field and capitalizing on the long touchdown strike.

The plan for Texas entering the week was for Thompson to start and play until he gave Steve Sarkisian a reason to take him out.

“Well Casey is going to start,” Sarkisian said of the Texas quarterback situation against West Virginia. “Casey will play until if something occurs where we need to make a change. But that is not a plan to have happen this week.”

Thompson’s slow start was enough of a reason for Sarkisian to take him out. After West Virginia bounced back with the touchdown to re-gain an 11-point lead at 28-17, Card again led Texas down the field. Roschon Johnson found the end zone for Texas, and the Longhorns trailed 28-23 following the failed two point conversion. After that score, Card had completed seven of his ten passes for 99 yards and the touchdown.
