Texas is having a disappointing year, but they are off to a good start in what could be their final regular season game of 2021.

On their first drive of Friday’s game against Kansas State, Texas running back Roschon Johnson scored a 9-yard touchdown by squeezing through a narrow hole and making defenders miss.

It was Johnson’s fifth touchdown of the season. The junior had a season-high 15 carries against West Virginia last weekend, as starter Bijan Robinson is out with a dislocated elbow. Prior to a score against the Mountaineers, Johnson had not found the end zone since Sept. 25.

Texas and Kansas State are tied 7-7 midway through the first quarter at Darrell K. Royal Stadium. Quarterback Casey Thompson got the start for the Longhorns, and he threw an interception on Texas’ second drive. The Wildcats capitalized on the turnover with a touchdown run of their own.

The Texas run defense is one of the worst in the Big 12, allowing nearly 200 yards per game.

Wideout Xavier Worthy continues his record-breaking rookie season. He caught the first three passes from Thompson for 29 yards. Nationally, he leads all freshmen in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. The true freshman entered Sunday with 12 scores and 9`16 yards.

Texas is looking to avoid their seventh consecutive loss. In total, the Longhorns have just four wins, so a win against Kansas State technically would not get them to bowl eligibility. However, five-win teams can sneak into the postseason if there are not enough bowl eligible teams. Of course, Texas would be an attractive option for a spot should the opportunity arise.

The last time Texas failed to win more than four games was 1997. If they fall to 4-8, it will be head coach Steve Sarkisian’s worst record in eight years of head coaching.
