WATCH: Texas 4-star WR Johntay Cook reels in long touchdown reception
DeSoto (Texas) four-star wide receiver Johntay Cook is one of the top wideouts in the 2023 class. The Texas commit is the No. 38 overall prospect and No. 7 wide receiver in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Cook demonstrated why on Friday night against New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine. Cook raced down the right sideline and caught a pass in stride from Desoto’s quarterback. He proceeded to sprint into the end zone untouched, setting the tone in a 35-10 victory.
Cook will soon be headed to Austin as part of one of the nation’s best recruiting classes. Additionally, he is the third-highest-ranked prospect in the Longhorns’ 2023 recruiting class behind New Orleans (La.) Isidore Newman Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Arch Manning and New Iberia (La.) Westgate five-star safety Derek Williams.
The wideout received high praise from On3’s Sam Spiegelman. He was given the “Best route-runner” honor in Spiegelman’s summer superlatives.

“Johntay Cook II has been a standout performer from event to event ranging from OT7 to the Future 50, and in the process has established himself as one of, if not, the best route-runners in the country,” Spiegelman wrote. “The Texas commitment out of DeSoto (Texas) is effortless in and out of his breaks and instantly accelerates to gain separation. Cook’s going to be a fun piece for Steve Sarkisian to work with.”
Johntay Cook On3 Scouting Summary
The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Johntay Cook:
“Smooth-moving receiver who is one of the better route-runners in the 2023 cycle. Shows the ability to tempo and toggle speeds within his routes. Can win at all levels of the field. Has long arms with a 6-foot-4 wing-span at 5-foot-11.5. The length helps create a large catch radius. Productive and efficient as a junior while facing top competition at one of the top talent-producing high school programs in Texas. Scored 18 touchdowns on just 38 receptions as a junior. Will need to continue improving on his reliability as a pass-catcher and eliminate concentration drops.”
Cook has an On3 NIL Valuation of $277K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
