Texas freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy opened the Red River Rivalry with a bang, taking a screen on the first play from scrimmage 75 yards for a touchdown, delivering a mean stiff arm along the way.

Worthy caught the Sooners defense sleeping on the first play and after the stiff arm, outran the Oklahoma defense to put the Longhorns up 7-0 early.

Texas followed up the game-opening touchdown with a dominant first possession defensively, sacking Spencer Rattler, forcing a three-and-out and blocking the ensuing punt.

Texas capitalized two plays later as star running back Bijan Robinson punched it in from two plays out to help the Longhorns take an early 14-0 lead

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian stated his excitement prior to the game, and it was clear after the first play that the Longhorns head coach is confident in his team’s chances against the undefeated Sooners.

“I’m fired up for the game,” Sarkisian said. “I love the pomp and pageantry of college football. I love the history and the nostalgia. To think this is the 117th game…that’s a crazy number. I’m looking forward to…we put in so much work during the week so we can enjoy the experience on gameday. I’m looking forward to it…it’s a great atmosphere, a great game.”

Texas enters the game ranked No. 21 in the country, sitting at 4-1 on the season. After a week two loss to Arkansas, Sarkisian has found his groove offensively behind quarterback Casey Thompson and Bijan Robinson. The Longhorns enter the Red River Rivalry coming off a tough 32-27 win against TCU. The Longhorns relied on Robinson in the win, as the sophomore carried the ball 35 times for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma, though still undefeated, has underperformed offensively relative to expectations. The Sooners opened the season surviving an upset scare against Tulane, rolled over Western Carolina 76-0, then played three-straight one-score games against Nebraska, West Virginia and Kansas State. Despite winning against Nebraska and West Virginia, Oklahoma scored less than 40 points combined in those two games.

Texas leads Oklahoma 14-0 early in the first quarter.
