Texas Longhorns second-year receiver Xavier Worthy put his speed on display in the Longhorns spring practice Saturday. The Texas football Twitter account posted a video of Worthy outrunning the defense on his way to a touchdown catch.

The 2021 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Worthy is coming off of a season in which he led the Longhorns in receiving with 62 catches for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns. With the addition of quarterback Quinn Ewers, the No. 1 prospect at his position in 2021, Worthy could be eyeing an even bigger year in his sophomore season.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound receiver committed to Texas as the No. 7 receiver and No. 56 overall prospect in the 2021 class according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. The California native also boasted offers from big-time programs such as Alabama, Georgia and Oregon in addition to Texas.

The Longhorns finished this past season with a 5-7 record in coach Steve Sarkisian, miss out on bowl action for the first time in four seasons. As always, there is optimism the program could change heading into next season, yet whether that actually happens remains to be seen. Asked in a recent press conference if he ever considered changing schools following the challenging first season, Worthy gave a strong answer.

“No, that wasn’t even a decision I made,” Worthy said. “I put my trust in Sark and I believe in Sark. I’m not just going to leave on him after one bad year.”

If he had entered the transfer portal, there’s no doubt Xavier Worthy would have been one of the hottest names out there thanks to his speed and skills. Teams can never have too many good receivers, especially all-conference guys entering just their second year in college football. Instead, Worthy is looking to build and improve with the Longhorns next season, fully trusting Sarkisian moving forward.

Texas is set to host its annual spring game on April 23 in Austin.
