2024 On3 top-60 RB Johann Cardenas commits to Texas Tech
Houston St. Thomas four-star running back Johann Cardenas announced his commitment to Texas Tech on Thursday night. He chose the Red Raiders over offers from Colorado, SMU and UTSA.
Cardenas is the No. 326 overall prospect and No. 32 running back in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 50 player in Texas.
On3 rates Cardenas higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2024 On300, he is the No. 58 overall prospect, No. 5 running back and No. 13 player in Texas.
“COMMITTED!!!!” Cardenas wrote in a statement published to social media. “I’m so unbelievably blessed to have the opportunity to play the game I love at the next level for this amazing program! Class of 2024 let’s keep it going! #WreckEm.”
The 6-foot-1, 217-pound tailback is now the highest-ranked recruit in the Red Raiders’ 2024 recruiting class. Eight juniors are currently committed to head coach Joey McGuire and his staff.

They include Cardenas, Lubbock (Texas) Lubbock-Cooper three-star interior offensive lineman Holton Hendrix, Madisonville (Texas) three-star athlete Lorenzo Johnson, Hawley (Texas) three-star athlete Chandlin Myers, Lubbock (Texas) Shallowater three-star interior offensive lineman Kasen Long, Odessa (Texas) wide receiver Ivan Carreon, Lake Dallas (Texas) wide receiver Keonde Henry and Hutto (Texas) quarterback Will Hammond.
Carreon and Henry are rated as four-stars by On3. Meanwhile, On3 ranks Hammond as a three-star recruit.
