Lamar Washington, 2022 three-star, commits to Texas Tech
Lamar Washington, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Portland (Ore.) AZ Compass Prep has committed to Texas Tech basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.
Washington is the No. 139 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is ranked as the No. 21 shooting guard and the No. 4 player in Arizona.
Texas Tech was Washington’s one and only official visit. He also included Auburn, Texas, Oregon State, and Washington State in his list of finalists.
Last season at Jefferson High School, Washington averaged 31.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, earning him Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Oregon.
Washington on his commitment to Texas Tech
“Just the family environment,” Washington explained why he chose Texas Tech. “I’m loyal to those who are loyal to me. Coach (Mark) Adams is a Lubbock guy. Me and Coach (Barret) Peery have had a great relationship since he’s been a head coach at Portland State, since my freshman year. I just have a great relationship with everyone on the staff and they’ve been on me since early on in my recruitment. They’ve been out here at 6 am practices, night practices watching me, it’s just shown a real commitment to me. So I just wanted to show them the same type of love.”

Washington was a top football prospect
Before deciding to go all-in on basketball earlier this year, Washington was a four-star football recruit. He received offers from USC, UCLA, Arizona, Kansas, Cal, Nebraska, amongst others.
“It really came down to what I loved, deep down in my heart,” Washington said. “I’ve loved basketball since I was a little kid so I felt like I wanted to better myself to the next step with that, in college and then try to go professional.”
In May of 2020, Lamar Washington received his first D1 basketball scholarship from Bryant University. Eastern Washington, Portland State, Montana State, Pacific, and other mid-majors followed.
Washington’s first power five offer came from Washington State, followed by Oregon State and TCU. Texas Tech offered in June of this year.
