Report: Louisana Tech is set to swipe staffer from Texas Tech
The coaching tree for the Texas Tech Red Raiders just lost a key piece for head coach Joey McGuire. On Monday, Chris Vannini of The Athletic broke the news of the Red Raiders’ former staffer who will now become the new co-offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach for Louisiana Tech. According to Vannini, sources close to the program expect Louisana Tech to appoint Jake Brown to the position of co-offensive coordinator.
Brown spent this season as Texas Tech’s offensive quality control coach, after spending for 2020 season in the same capacity for the Baylor Bears. Louisana Tech’s new wide receivers coach spent 2019 in Canyon TX as the offensive coordinator for the West Texas A&M Buffaloes. Under Brown, the Buffaloes saw jumps in several key stats, highlighting an increase in their offensive performance. And in just one year, they went from averaging 23 points per game to 32.5. West Texas A&M also averaged close to 100 yards more total offense per game under Brown.
Brown has also held coaching positions at TCU and Stephen F Austin. And before joining the college coaching ranks, he was a well-renowned high school football coach in Texas. He coached at high-end programs such as Lake Travis, Arlington Martin, and Midlothian; where he helped produce a pair of number one overall picks in defensive end Myles Garrett and quarterback Baker Mayfield. Ironically, both his former stars are part of the same pro roster in Cleveland.
Joey McGuire loses Sonny Cumbie as Texas Tech OC
In November, McGuire made a decision on the Red Raiders’ current interim head coach and offensive coordinator, Sonnie Cumbie. According to McGuire himself, he will retain the services of Cumbie next season as the Texas Tech offensive coordinator.
When asked about his decision to keep the Red Raiders interim head coach, McGuire got straight to the point.

“Sonny Cumbie is one of the top offensive minds in the country and we are fortunate to have him remain on our staff here at Texas Tech,” said McGuire.
But that reality was short-lived, as Cumbie had other plans in mind. The Texas Tech offensive coordinator accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana Tech. Cumbie replaced Skip Holtz, who was with the Bulldogs for nine years, compiling a 64-50 record in that time.
Cumbie has not coached his final game with the Red Raiders just yet. Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said will still coach the Red Raiders in their upcoming bowl game. He also asked all of the remaining coaches on the staff to work through the bowl game as well.
“I’d like to personally congratulate Sonny Cumbie on being named the next head coach at Louisiana Tech,” Hocutt said in a statement. “I think anyone that knows Sonny can feel the passion and love he has for Texas Tech University and West Texas, and he brought that every day this past year as our offensive coordinator and most recently as our interim head coach.”
