By the next time Texas is on the schedule to play Texas Tech in Lubbock, the Longhorns might be in the SEC. There’s no promise these two teams are going to play another football game down the road, with conference realignment taking down another rivalry. So Saturday’s game meant a lot to the Red Raiders, wanting to get one more final win at home.
Joey McGuire’s team found a way to get a win, sending the entire Texas Tech faithful into a frenzy.
It had to happen in dramatic fashion, with overtime taking place at Jones AT&T Stadium. As they did all night, the Texas Tech defense came up clutch, forcing a fumble from Texas running back Bijan Robinson. A game-winning field goal won the game before fans stormed the field.

For some, the video might have shades of the 2008 upset the Red Raiders pulled off, the last win against the Longhorns at home. If Saturday truly is goodbye in Lubbock, the win will forever go down in history.

More on Texas Tech upsetting Texas
From the beginning of the game, Texas Tech’s strategy was to wear down the Texas defense. Over the course of four quarters and overtime, the Red Raiders ran over 100 plays. When it was clutch time in Lubbock, you could tell how tired Pete Kwiatkowski’s unit was.
Now, McGuire finds himself with a perfect 1-0 career record in the Big 12, while Steve Sarkisian falls to 3-7 throughout two years. It’s an important result for both coaches but for totally different reasons. As the Big 12 season continues to progress over the rest of the year, this will be one where Texas and Texas Tech will look back on as benchmarks.
