If anybody in the college football game knows Texas high school football, it’s Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire. The first two decades of his career were spent at the high school level, with the majority spent as the head coach at Cedar Hill.

McGuire went back to his roots on Sunday, talking to the Texas High School Coaches Association as the Red Raiders head coach. When discussing the stadium renovations the football program recently announced, he took some time to make a bold proclamation and their season finale against Oklahoma.

With an end zone in AT&T Jones Stadium set to get knocked down, McGuire said there’s something else Texas Tech plans on doing. He says the end zone will go out with a bang by getting a win over the Sooners on Nov. 26.

“We’re gonna beat OU and then we’re gonna knock down the end zone,” McGuire said via Greg Tepper of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Being able to defeat Oklahoma, let alone in Lubbock, has been a difficult task for Texas Tech over the past decade-plus. 2011 was the last time the Red Raiders emerged victorious, with 2009 being the last home win. McGuire will be the fifth head coach since the latter date, while Oklahoma will be on its third.

Those losses have not been light either. Oklahoma has won by an average of 34.7 points per game over the last three matchups. Only three times has the game ended within one possession as the Sooners are on 10 game winning streak.

If McGuire is going to put his money where his mouth is, he will have to overcome some recent history going against his side. But the head coach will most likely tell you nothing that happened in the past matters anymore. He will be focused on his 2022 team, hoping to continue momentum built from the end of last season.

Whether it’s in the recruiting world or promising some wins in the month of July, McGuire is doing the best he can to advertise his Texas Tech program. Texas high school football will continue to be his biggest outlet, especially out in West Texas.

After being hired from Baylor and head coach Dave Aranda’s staff, Joey McGuire will get his own go as a head coach. Getting wins against Oklahoma, especially as they are leaving for the SEC within the coming years, would go a long way to make sure it’s a success.
