Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough was adamant about the Red Raiders’ potential in 2023, as long as the team stays healthy.

Shough felt the team underachieved in 2022 but going into the fall, Texas Tech could steal the Big 12. There was a rise in hype about the football team, but the general consensus is still “show me, don’t tell me.”

Shough was firm about the talent of the Texas Tech football team going into the fall.

“In my six-year college career I’ve never been around a team as close as we are,” Shough said on Sirius XM’s Big 12 Radio. “You know the way we how we feel about each other, the way we interact on a daily basis, we’re truly a player-led team to where the coaches are gonna run stuff and call plays but at the end of the day, we’re the ones out there playing and we have such a fine belief in each other that it’s really common to me.

“And then we have the talent you know, you have to have talent to go and play and the trust that we have each other, the wide receiver the o-line, some transfers, running back, the defensive units up front coming back and it’s in the same with our secondary, it’s pretty special.”

Shough played just 11 games over the last two years with Texas Tech. Last season, he threw for 1,310 yards, seven touchdowns, four interceptions and a 59.9% completion percentage.

If he’s healthy the whole season, this could be a special year for the Red Raiders.

“We kind of had some people ask you know, if last year was kind of like a once in a while thing,” Shough said. “I felt like we underachieved last year. We had so much uncertainty at quarterback, there’s a lot of injuries …

“But at the same time, if everyone can stay healthy, TCU you know, obviously got really lucky and stayed healthy last year and they put it together a really good year. I think there’s no telling what we can do.”

As a member of the Class of 2018, Shough was a four-star recruit out of Chandler (Ari.) Hamilton, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 12 quarterback in the class and the N. 122 overall prospect in the class.
