Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall agreed to a contract extension with the school, keeping him with the Green Wave for the foreseeable future.

Sumrall was expected to be a hot commodity in this coaching cycle. Tulane made it to the AAC Championship Game this year, losing to Army.

Sumrall went 9-4 this season and is scheduled to play Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl later this month. He went 23-4 in two seasons at Troy before being hired by the Green Wave ahead of the 2024 season.

“I’m excited to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Jon Sumrall on a contract extension that will keep him as the Green Wave’s head football coach,” athletic director Davis Harris said. “With this in place, we can continue the growth of our championship-caliber football program in New Orleans.

“After working with him and his staff for the past year, I’m convinced that Jon is the right leader at the right time for our football program. He brings an incredible combination of leadership, passing, competitive spirit and care for our student-athletes to the job each day.”

Harris said Sumrall was the right leader considering how college athletics continues to evolve.

“The landscape of college athletics is constantly evolving and Jon’s vision helps to position us to succeed in this rapidly changing environment,” Harris said. “Today’s news is a reflection of the bright future that both of us believe exists for the football program. We will work together and relentlessly to bring a championship back to Uptown.

“I look forward to seeing the Green Wave family in Tampa Bay for the Gasparilla Bowl on December 20th. Roll Wave!”
