Tulane AD: 'Proactive and necessary work is being done' to keep Jon Sumrall amid interest
Tulane’s Jon Sumrall is a fashionable name being floated for a legion of coaching vacancies throughout college football, but Green Wave athletic director David Harris isn’t letting him go with a fight.
On Wednesday, Harris sent a message to Tulane’s fanbase, letting them know he’s doing all he can to keep Sumrall in New Orleans. According to the athletic director, they’re being “proactive and the necessary work is being done” to stop their coach from examining external offers.
“Green Wave Nation, I’ve seen your posts and messages. Please know it’s just as important to me that Coach Sumrall continues to lead @GreenWaveFB,” Harris posted on X. “Rest assured; we have been proactive and the necessary work is being done. Now let’s go win a championship! #RollWave.”
Sumrall joined the Green Wave this past offseason, and he’s quickly endeared himself to the fanbase. Tulane finished their first season with him at the helm at 9-3, with a 7-1 record within the American Athletic Conference.
Prior to his time in New Orleans, Sumrall coached in the Sun Belt Conference, leading the Troy Trojans to a couple of seasons of immense success. He went 23-4 over two seasons, with a 14-2 record within the conference, as well.

His name has been thrown out into the conversation for a myriad of opportunities due to his success as a head coach. He has a past in the SEC, spending time with Ole Miss and Kentucky. The Wildcats have bene an intriguing option, as many fans have clamored for him to return home, as Mark Stoops and the program had a tumultuous season in 2024.
It’s not that simple, as Sumrall also had prior ties to Tulane. Could he feasibly move on from the Green Wave for a larger opportunity? Of course, but it’s something the program is trying to actively prevent, and for good reason.
It remains to be seen whether Jon Sumrall has another season or a couple more in New Orleans within him, or if he opts for greener pastures in the coming years. Regardless, his star is burning bright at the moment.
