NCAA makes decision on John Rhys Plumlee baseball eligibility for 2022
The NCAA has denied the waiver of John Rhys Plumlee to be immediately eligible for the 2022 college baseball season, he posted on Twitter. Plumlee spent the past three years at Ole Miss before transferring to UCF this offseason.
“I have just been informed that the NCAA has denied my wavier to be immediately eligible this year for baseball season,” Plumlee wrote. “Although this breaks my heart, I know that God has a plan through it all. I am blessed to be here and know that there are big things coming.”
The Mississippi native was a two-sport athlete for the Rebels in both baseball and football. He spent his freshman season in Oxford splitting time under center with Matt Corral, finishing with 1,023 yards rushing and 16 total touchdowns. He later took a backseat as Corral assumed a full-time starting role over the past two seasons. Plumlee was still involved this past season as a receiver, bringing in 18 catches for 200 yards.
He also starred on the diamond at Ole Miss, batting .267 in 2021 to finish with one home run and seven RBI. Known for his speed, the centerfielder also stole seven bases in nine attempts.
Plumlee was a four-star recruit and No. 24 quarterback in the 2019 class according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He elected to stay close to home and attend Ole Miss over offers from big-time programs such as Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame.

The Rebels are coming off of just their second 10-win season in the past 18 years and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. Corral entered the NFL draft following the end of the season and Ole Miss brought in USC transfer Jaxson Dart to be his replacement.
Ole Miss is currently the No. 3 team in the country according to D1Baseball.com’s top 25 rankings, while UCF is unranked. The Knights sit a 4-0 on the young season after earning a three-game sweep of Siena and knocking off North Florida on Tuesday. They are set to begin another three-game series Friday against Georgia Southern.
Although John Rhys Plumlee won’t be able to join the baseball team this year, all signs point to him making an appearance in 2023. He is set to be a junior next football season, where it is unclear whether he will play quarterback or stay at receiver.
UCF is set to open the 2022 football season on Sept. 1 against South Carolina State.
