UCF Knights quarterback John Rhys Plumlee to miss time due to leg injury
In the final drive of UCF‘s win over Boise State, quarterback John Rhys Plumlee led the Knights down the field. In the process, he took a shot, with his leg being bent underneath him. He stayed in the game, setting up the game winning kick at the time.
However, Plumlee was clearly injured and now UCF coach Gus Malzahn has shared that he’s going to miss multiple games due to a leg injury. Luckily, surgery will not be required.
“Update on John Rhys,” Malzahn said. “He had an injury late in that game. Took a pretty good hit. He’s gonna be out this week and he’ll be out for a few weeks. The good thing is he doesn’t need surgery. He will be back.”
The coaching staff at UCF was concerned about the number of hits Plumlee was taking last season, looking to have him slide more and run less in 2023. However, his running ability is what makes him a special player and it was on a run when his cleat seemed to get caught in the turf as he took a shot that Plumlee was injured.
In place of John Rhys Plumlee, UCF will be starting Timmy McClain, a transfer from USF. He has experience and Malzahn says the staff is excited about him.
“I’ll keep you updated as we go, but we’re gonna go with Timmy McClain this week. Timmy is a guy that we think really highly of. He’s had a really good Fall Camp. In practice on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, he’s got really equal reps almost to John Rhys. So, he’s ready to go. We have a lot of confidence in him. A guy that has played and started football games as a true freshman. So, really feel good about Timmy taking over for that.”
Behind McClain will be true freshman Dylan Rizk. According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Rizk was a three-star recruit and the 46th-ranked quarterback overall in the Class of 2023.

“Dylan Rizk will be our number two guy. I’m really excited for him too. He had a very good Fall Camp too, and like I told our team, when you lose somebody like that, everybody else just has to raise their level. That’s our challenge for that.”

John Rhys Plumlee is donating jersey sales to a children’s hospital
This season, John Rhys Plumlee decided that instead of taking the money he makes off jersey sales, he’s going to donate it back to the Orlando community. That means, donating the proceeds he receives from his jersey sales to the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
“Donating 100% of my proceeds from my jersey sales to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children,” John Rhys Plumlee posted.
Plumlee’s jersey is currently on sale at Fanatics for $139.
