Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins advanced to 6-2 on the season, following their 28-16 win over Colorado on Saturday.

While the Buffaloes certainly haven’t, Kelly’s program has flown slightly under the radar in 2023. Regardless, the Bruins are moving in tremendous shape, and look like they’re going to continue moving up the rankings in the coming weeks.

However, a lot of that will depend on the Bruins’ quarterback situation. Ethan Garbers and Dante Moore have done the heavy lifting at the position thus far, and Garbers looked good against the Buffaloes.

Ahead of a showdown with Arizona next weekend, Kelly isn’t giving anything away, as the UCLA leader addressed his quarterback situation following the team’s win against Colorado.

“We analyze everything during the week,” Kelly answered. “We don’t make anything rash after the game and say, ‘Hey, this is what tomorrow’s going to be like, or what Wednesday’s going to be like.’ Ben’s great at depth charts, and questions about depth charts during the week, but we won’t finalize anything until we get to game-day next week.

“We play at like midnight, so we’ve got all day Saturday to figure out who our quarterback is going to be.”

Alas, Chip Kelly is going to take his time in choosing his quarterback, as it’s worked out for UCLA in 2023 so far. The Wildcats are no longer pushovers, so it’ll be a tough game for the Bruins in Week 10, but Kelly’s team has been up to the challenge over the course of the season.

With the win, UCLA improved to 6-2 on the season, making the Bruins bowl eligible once again. With that, Kelly got a six-figure bonus.

Getting the win, plus a bowl game appearance, gave Kelly a substantial bonus with four games left in the regular season.

“UCLA coach Chip Kelly set for $125,000 in bonuses as Bruins get 6th win of the season and become eligible for bowl game by beating Colorado,” USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz wrote on Twitter. “He’ll get $25K for 6th regular season win. He’ll get at least $100,000 for a bowl appearance.”

Kelly, 59, is 33-31 at UCLA since 2018 when he returned to the college game. He had to rebuild a Bruins program down in the dumps and finally turned it around in 2021.

He went 8-4 that season and followed it up with a 9-4 season last year, including a Sun Bowl appearance and No. 21 ranking in the final AP Poll.

Kelly is 79-38 as a college head coach with UCLA and Oregon. The future looks bright with five-star quarterback Dante Moore getting experience as a true freshman and UCLA moving onto the Big Ten starting in 2024.
