DeShaun Foster knows what it means to be a Bruin. That has made his perspective of what UCLA should be that much easier to see as their next head coach.

Foster had more to say about his view for UCLA Football while at Big Ten Media Days this week. He did admit, though, that he’s not one for a pitch. His usual approach is to offer full clarity by allowing full access for anyone interested in coming to Hollywood.

“I’ve really just opened it up. I wanted people just to see what UCLA has to offer,” said Foster. “I’m not really a car salesman, so it was more just come out here and see what we’re about, see if you can feel the energy, and see if you want to be a part of that. It’s been going well so far.”

However, as for his actual outlook, Foster highlighted a trio of values that he wants within his program. If his players can bring each of those three daily to every single thing they do, he thinks they’ll be just fine in his debut and tenure.

“Three things you will see with my football team is discipline, respect, and enthusiasm. Those are my pillars,” Foster stated. “No matter what, you should be able to see that – win, lose, or draw.

“You see my guys in the classroom? You should see that. You see them in the dorms? You should see that. Anywhere, you should see discipline, respect, and enthusiasm out of my football players,” Foster added. “I think, if we do that and we’re able to present that every game, the outcome will come out in our favor.”

Again, Foster would know what will work at UCLA as well as anyone. He is a former running back for the Bruins who ranks all throughout their all-time records list on the ground as well as for the Pac-10. That includes for statistics like touchdowns scored with 44, rushing yards with 3,194 yds, and scoring with 266 points.

Foster still has much to establish with his former and now current program, especially with his first season coming up. Still, with his background and resumé in Los Angeles, he has more than enough to set the standard of what he’s looking for with UCLA.

Foster on reaction to opening statement: ‘I’m not a big talker’

Deshaun Foster did not get off to a hot start at Big Ten Media Days when he gave his opening statement.

UCLA’s new coach appeared to freeze on the podium, cut his monologue short, and just answered questions from the media in attendance. Twitter and social media immediately critiqued him coming on stage.

Foster’s opening statement can be seen below for context.

However, Foster wasn’t fazed and he even said he did not want to be something he’s not.

“It was cool, you know I’ll probably get on Twitter and see some jokes later but I haven’t seen any yet,” Foster said afterwards. “It’s me. I can’t be something that I’m not. It’s just tough for me. I’m not a big talker and then you put me up there and you guys ask me what you want to know.”
