On Sunday, UCLA women’s basketball ended South Carolina‘s 43-game win streak in jaw-dropping 77-62 fashion. The stunning showing didn’t go unnoticed by UCLA head football coach DeShaun Foster, who congratulated the WBB team on the win during his Monday press conference.

“There’s one team that did beat SC this weekend. Our women’s basketball team did a great job, came out, dominated the No. 1 team. They are also No. 1 now themselves,” Foster said. “I’m just proud of them. Coach Close, she does a good job over there, and she has truly built a culture.

“They’re always in the top 10, but it was just awesome to see them come out and the atmosphere that was in that arena — I haven’t seen anything like that since Baron Davis. So, it was pretty cool to just see how awesome everybody was and excited. It was a white out and they pretty much dominated the whole game from tip to zero.”

Foster isn’t exaggerating. The Bruins never trailed in the win and boasted a 21-point lead by halftime. UCLA was excellent from 3-point range, connecting on 10-of-its-21 attempts. Londynn Jones was particularly on fire, draining all five of her 3-point attempts.

While South Carolina also shot it well from range, it struggled to find any consistency inside the arc. In the loss, the Gamecocks shot just 36.4% from the field. Moreover, they committed 13 turnovers, which UCLA converted into 15 points.

The win was UCLA’s first over a No. 1 opponent in program history. They were previously 0-20 in such games. UCLA head coach Cori Close didn’t take the momentuous win for granted.

“This game is about our program and where we’re going, but also about the game of basketball,” Close said after the game. “I just think what we saw from over the whole weekend is so important to continue to grow our game, and thank you all for being here to help us do that.

“I’ve played against South Carolina several times – and I meaning we, the Bruins – and this means a lot because Dawn Staley has set the tone of what women’s basketball excellence should be over the last several years. I just have so much respect for her, for her staff for the way they have a global view of the game. So this, obviously, means a lot because of the respect we have.”
