Ethan Garbers injury update: DeShaun Foster shares where UCLA QB stands for Minnesota game
UCLA coach DeShaun Foster didn’t have much to say about whether quarterback Ethan Garbers will play Saturday against Minnesota. Garbers missed a Week 6 contest against Penn State due to an ankle injury after starting the previous four games.
Justyn Martin got the start in his place and finished 22-of-30 passing for 161 yards and one touchdown in a 27-11 loss. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Foster revealed that both QB are practicing this week but did not indicate who will get the nod.
“Ethan’s looking good, but both of them are taking reps, so I’ve got two quarterbacks that are practicing with him,” he said.
When asked a follow up about what would go into making the decision on who to start, Foster gave a short answer of “that it’s my decision.” Pressed again for more, he offered up another curt response.

“Who I thinks playing well,” he said. “I’m just gonna go with who I trust.”
Garbers has completed 67-of-117 (57.3%) passes for 808 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions interceptions this season. He had his worst game of the year in a 34-13 loss to Oregon in Week 5, going 12-20 (60%) for 118 yards while throwing two of those picks and being sacked four times before leaving.
Even if Ethan Garbers is healthy, UCLA may still opt to go with Martin moving forward given its 0-3 start to conference play. Foster was complimentary of what he saw out of the redshirt sophomore against the Nittany Lions in his postgame comments.
“Justyn came out and played a good game, able to stay ahead of the chains in some situations and stuff,” Foster said. “You know, other situations we might have wanted to do differently, but the fact that where we played at and the way that he played, that was really a positive. So, I’m happy with how Justyn played.”
UCLA is set to kick off against Minnesota at 6 p.m. PT on Saturday in Los Angeles.
