Another UCLA Bruins player is leaving the sunny beaches of California for the wide-open plains in the Midwest. Wide receiver Keontez Lewis announced on Tuesday that he would be headed to the dairy state to join the Wisconsin Badgers football program.

Keontez Lewis is a freshman receiver out of East St Louis high school in Illinois. He played in a total of 11 games for the Bruins this year but did not record a single catch or even register in any other statistical category. Lewis announced his decision to transfer early in Dec., in a similar fashion, while thanking his UCLA teammates and coaches.

His decision came shortly after another UCLA Bruin, defensive back Jay Shaw announced on Instagram that he to will transfer to Wisconsin. For Shaw, this will be his sixth collegiate season. The former three-star recruit will use the free year of eligibility given by the NCAA during the COVID-19 pandemic to make a move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten.

A word on Shaw

Jay Shaw played 31 games at UCLA before deciding to transfer to Wisconsin, primarily spending his time at cornerback. Over his career, Shaw has 87 tackles with five interceptions and 10 pass deflections. He added two forced fumbles and a pick six as well.

In addition to a graphic announcing his decision, Shaw posted a caption with the location tag set for Madison, Wisconsin.

“New location with a deeper dedication. Vageta. Trunks. Kakarot. In other words you dig what I’m Saiyan,” Shaw posted.

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
