4-star WR Ja'Kobi Lane commits to USC
Mesa (Ariz.) Red Mountain four-star wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane has committed to USC. A 6-foot-5, 180 pound wideout, Lane chose the Trojans over multiple programs including Auburn, Oregon, Utah and Texas A&M.
Lane is the No. 389 overall prospect and No. 54 wide receiver in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 9 player in Arizona.
On3 rates him even higher. Per the 2023 On300, Lane is the No. 287 overall prospect, No. 41 wide receiver and No. 6 player in Arizona.
Lane is now the third wide receiver in USC’s 2023 recruiting class, which ranked No. 12 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 1 in the Pac-12 prior to his commitment. The others are Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman Five-Star Plus+ wideout Zachariah Branch and Los Alamitos (Calif.) four-star wide receiver Makai Lemon, who is high school teammates with USC Five-Star Plus+ quarterback commit Malachi Nelson.

In a conversation with On3’s Scott Schrader, Lane broke down what stood out to him about the Trojans.
“I’ve definitely realized the relationship I’ve built with USC is something very strong,” Lane told Schrader. “For the path I want to take with my life, that school is a place I could thrive at and do well at. Especially with the position I play, of course. Them having high draft picks at wide receiver with the same body type I have is a big factor. It’s just a really good fit for me.
Ja’Kobi Lane Scouting Summary
The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Ja’Kobi Lane:
“Jump ball fiend who is an absolute menace when it comes to 50-50 balls. Long and lean athletic build with plenty of room to grow. Stands in at 6-foot-4, over 170 pounds with a 6-foot-8 wingspan. Jumped a freaky 34-inch vertical for his size during the spring camp circuit prior to his junior season. Body positioning and balance is second to none compared to other X-type receivers in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Natural pass catcher who has strong hands and plucks the ball with ease.
“Totaled 76 catches for 990 yards and 14 touchdowns during his junior campaign. Solid twitch for his size, can get off the line of scrimmage. Lacks top end speed in order to separate from defenders when pushing vertically. Will be a significant redzone threat at the next level and can see his NFL stock rise as he gets stronger and more explosive with a collegiate strength and conditioning program.”
Lane has an On3 NIL Valuation of $23K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
