Caleb Williams analyzes play of USC offensive line
The USC Trojans are putting the final touches on the team and roster for the 2023 season at their fall training camp. The Trojans have revamped some key areas on the team in order to build off of their 11-3 2022 season. One of the units that underwent an overhaul was the offensive line.
The offensive line has looked up to par at USC’s fall camp during drills and team activities. But that perspective is mainly from the outside looking in. In order to get a true idea of how USC’s offensive line is progressing, it would have to be looked at through the eyes of the individual they are protecting: the quarterback. And according to USC Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams, the perspective from the outside matches what he’s seeing inside the pocket.
“Yeah, they’ve been good. It’s been fun. They’ve been giving me a lot of space; a lot of room to do what I need to do. I’ve been feeling real comfortable back there. And it’s been fun, like I said,” said Williams.
Last season, USC allowed Williams to be sacked 30 times. That number would have likely been higher had it not been for his ability to escape opposing teams’ pass rush and make incredible plays downfield. This season, USC head coach Lincoln Riley made it a point of emphasis to fix his offensive line and allow Williams the opportunity to deliver the ball more efficiently to all the weapons at his disposal. And if the offensive line can keep Williams well-protected this year, fans should anticipate the Trojans fixing the wrongs of last season by winning the Pac-12 title and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Williams shares what is different entering second year at USC
Williams also revealed he has no plans of taking his foot off the gas after his 2022 Heisman Trophy campaign. Comfortable and confident heading into the new season, he might leave the rest of the conference in the dust as USC sets its sight for one final conference championship.
Williams isn’t taking any prisoners on his path to the College Football Playoff in 2023, and he’s as poised as ever under head coach Lincoln Riley.
“Not just for myself, but for everybody overall. Most of the guys that are playing have been in the offense for a while. But confidence in the scheme and things like that,” Williams said of his team’s comfortability. “After you get a year under your belt, you get a bunch of trials and tribulations. You get a bunch of successful plays and things like that, but [it helps build] confidence overall. Then you get to work on it during the whole summer, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”
