USC lost their first game of the season on Saturday in a major Pac-12 matchup against Utah. The Trojans had a double-digit lead several times in Salt Lake City but the Utes hung around long enough to score a late touchdown and convert on a two-point try to win 43-42. Afterward, USC QB Caleb Williams was visibly upset as he came off the field. While he kept his emotions in check all week, he said the defeat just brought it out of him.
Williams addressed the emotion during media following the game. He said it all boils down to the fact that he and his teammates lost a hard-fought battle against a solid opponent.

“I lost. We lost. There was a lot of fight in this team. We put in a lot of work for so long. I’m gonna be honest. I hate losing. I hate it, simply. So I had a little emotion,” said Williams. “That was one of the things Coach Riley talked about last week is just control it. Because I love this game. I’m gonna play with these guys over here that I get to play with. So, after a hard loss versus a good team, I had a little emotion.”
Williams had nothing to be ashamed of in what was yet another great performance from the sophomore. He threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for an additional 57 yards. Still, it was all for naught in what was a crushing defeat for USC.

While it brought out the emotion from Williams, he says this isn’t the final chapter. While they won’t go unblemished, there’s a lot to still potentially accomplish in Los Angeles. This part of the book didn’t go their way, but it isn’t the final word in what Williams and the Trojans can still do.
“The only thing we can promise you is that we aren’t gonna go undefeated. But that’s not the end all, be all of this season or of this team.”
