Expectations were high for USC, Lincoln Riley, and Caleb Williams coming into the 2022 college football season. In some ways, though, they’ve almost exceeded them during their undefeated start to the year. While that creates added pressure, Williams says there’s nothing else he’s focused on besides the Trojan’s game each week.

In an interview with Matt Leinart on ‘CFB on FOX’, Williams talked about the projections for USC and where he thinks they can go from here. While predictions are nice and all, Williams sees it all as simple math. If the Trojans go undefeated each week, then it’ll add up to the season everyone thinks they’re capable of.

“I’m not putting any big expectations (on us) just because that’s just unneeded pressure. You need to think about going 1-0 every week and, if we go 1-0 every week (and) if you do the math, it turns out pretty well. I’m not putting on any expectations. I don’t really have any,” said Williams. “Every week, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we focus on going 1-0. You have your 24-hour grace period and then you start that trend back over every single week. I’m focused on going 1-0 this week and I can’t wait to get out there.”

USC has rinsed and repeated that process on their way to a 6-0 start. It’s the best open to a season since 2006 and could get even better with some of the games on their slate in the second half of the year. Still, Williams doesn’t want he and his teammates to get ahead of themselves. It’s a marathon to get to where they want, not a sprint. If they stay the course starting with this weekend’s Top-20 matchup against Utah, it’ll all add up in the Trojan’s favor by season’s end.
