Earlier in April, USC landed a commitment out of the NCAA transfer portal from coveted guard Keonte Jones. Formerly playing a California State University-Northridge, Jones opted to stay in the state, jumping up the level of competition.

It was a nice addition for head coach Eric Musselman heading into his second season with the program. However, it won’t come to fruition. On Monday, Jones took to X to decommit from the Trojans, thanking them for the opportunity.

“After much thought, I have decided to decommit from the University of Southern California,” the The 6-6 forward who averaged 13.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists this season posted on X. “Thank you to USC for the opportunity.

While USC thought they were getting an efficient scorer in Jones, who made 50% of his field goals during the 2024-2025 season, the Trojans will now have to look elsewhere for help. He’s re-opening his options, and now it remains to be seen where he lands for the 2025-26 season.

Moreover, Jones’ efforts were good enough for him to be named first-team All-Big West. When his name was put into the transfer portal, he instantly become one of the top mid major names available. Staying out West seemed to have been a priority for him, but it won’t be USC any longer.

Earlier last season, the Trojans actually got a first-hand look at what Jones looked like. The Trojans faced off against California State University-Northridge during the nonconference portion of the season. Jones dropped 17 points on 7-14 shooting plus three made free throws.

The rest of the stat sheet was filled up too. Jones secured 10 rebounds for a double-double while adding four assists, two steals, and three blocks. You have to imagine Musselman did not have to do much scouting on Jones, having the Dec. 18 matchup in Los Angeles at the top of his mind. Evidently, something changed, and now he’ll be on the open market once again.
