Donte Williams reveals joke with wide receiver Drake London

USC head coach Donte Williams and the USC Trojans are looking to secure back-to-back wins this Saturday night against the Utah Utes. The Trojans have an ace up their sleeve in arguably the most unstoppable receiver in college football this year.

Junior receiver Drake London has been a monster in the passing game for USC. And very few teams, if any, have had very little luck slowing him down. On Tuesday Williams talked about his star playmaker on the outside.

But before doing so, he issued an interesting challenge.

“Well first things first, right before I came out here I told Drake I’d lock him up, so I still feel that way, but he knows…,” Williams said jokingly as London entered the room.

He then reiterated his joke to London asking who would lock him up before answering his own question with a “me.”

That aside, Williams knows how hard it would be for others to lock him up.

“One thing I’ll say about Drake — that’s impressive — is teams go into the game knowing that they have to stop him and look at a play at Colorado in the red zone when Gary Bryant caught that touchdown pass, they triple teamed him. So, they had a safety, a corner, and a linebacker underneath. And majority of the game you know they were double-teaming him. It’s one thing for them to double team him and he doesn’t catch the ball. They’re double-teaming him and he still catching the ball. It’s credit to him. He’s competitive as I don’t know what, and he’ll continue to be that way.”

The unstoppable London

Over the first five games this season, London has more receptions and yards than in his entire 2019 season. The same goes for the 2020 year but it was shortened due to COVID. Right now, he has 48 receptions for 670 yards and four touchdowns. His 670 receiving yards is almost as much as the entire team has in rushing yards (687). Just to put into perspective how much of a focal point of the Trojans offense he is, his 48 catches is more than all the other receivers on the team combined (43).

Through the first five games, he has been held to under 130 yards receiving just one time. That was in the Trojans’ week 2 loss against Stanford with coach Clay Helton still running the show. In that loss, he had four receptions for 68 yards and one touchdown.

Although the USC Trojans are currently experiencing a tumultuous season in comparison to where they thought they would be, that has not stopped Drake London from putting together one of the best receiving performances we have seen from a USC receiver in a long time. With this kind of productivity, there is no doubt that he is destined for the NFL.

Whether his coach can actually succeed in locking him up or not.
