Oregon‘s first half performance against Ohio State in the Rose bowl on Wednesday drew criticism from across social media as the Ducks trailed the Buckeyes 34-8 at the break.

One of the most brutal takes on the Ducks’ first half performance came from former USC longsnapper Jake Olson. Olson, who famously became the first completely blind athlete to play in a Division I football game in 2017, pulled no punches as he poked fun at Oregon’s first half defecit.

“When I was told I would have to lose my one and only eye and go completely blind, I was sad to think how I’d never be able to actually see USC win another championship,” his post on X reads. “But then I thought about all the Oregon fans and told myself, if they could do it, so could I!”

The first half saw almost nothing go right for the Ducks. Trailing 34-0 before scoring a touchdown and converting the two-point conversion on the final play of the half.

However, explosive plays were what put the game in Ohio State’s favor early. Oregon gave up four offensive touchdowns of 40 yards or more during the first two quarters.

One of those came from on the ground from running back TreVeyon Henderson, which covered 66 yards and the only big play from the ruhsing attack. Still, the group finished with 15 carries for 121 yards at halftime.

However, the bulk of their success came from the air. Quarterback Will Howard went 11 of 18 passing for 269 yards and three touchdowns. True freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was largely unstoppable as well, catching five passes for a whopping 161 yards and two of Howard’s three touchdowns. Emeka Egbuka caught the other.

Oregon would go on to score a touchdown during its first drive of the second half, cutting into the lead and even forcing an Ohio State three-and-out on their ensuing possession. Ohio State would earn that touchdown back before the third quarter ended, giving the Buckeyes a 41-15 lead heading into the fourth.

The winner will go on to face Texas in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Jan. 10.
