Greg McElroy doesn’t believe it’s even a debate, Caleb Williams is the best player in all of college football.

During his latest episode of Always College Football, the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback didn’t mince words, he believes Williams enters the 2023 season the clear and uncut top player in all of the sport. Coming off a Heisman Trophy victory and entering the season with a ton of hype, there’s not a lot of reasons to disagree with McElroy.

“USC, Heisman Trophy winner, do we really need to go into the depths of why he’s the best?” asked McElroy. “I mean, I don’t feel like anybody that’s listening to this show needs me to explain to them why Caleb Williams is super elite. So can we just put him at No. 1, save some time and move on to No. 2? Are we all good there? If we want a more complete Caleb Williams break down, we can do so at another day.

“But let’s just be brief. The guy’s an absolute machine. He’s unbelievable. Top prospect in all of college football. Guy’s incredible. If I could start a team this year with anyone, it’d be him. Say no more.”

You’re not going to find many arguments from anyone around college football. McElroy kept it simple and proved his point, the USC star should be atop any list entering the season.

Moreover, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power completely agrees with McElroy’s assessment, as On3 ranked Williams No. 1 in On3’s top 100 college football players for the 2023 season. Afterwards, Power joined Paul Finebaum on The Paul Finebaum Show to discuss the ranking, and heap some high praise on Williams.

“Caleb Williams was an easy decision,” Power said. “The reigning Heisman winner. I think in a typical year, you would maybe see Drake Maye be the number one guy. There was a feeling I think within NFL circles that both those guys would have maybe been the number one pick in this past draft if they had been eligible.

“But Caleb Williams, in my opinion, is the best college football players since Trevor Lawrence — maybe the best playmaker since Lamar Jackson. So easy decision.”

Alas, the question now becomes one of if Caleb Williams will live up to the hype in 2023. We’re not willing to bet against him, so do so at your own risk moving forward.
