Mason Cobb isn't putting a ceiling on USC's potential on defense
USC inside linebacker Mason Cobb has been with the program only one semester since transferring in from Oklahoma State. But the fourth-year college player believes in what is being built on the defensive side of the football.
When asked about the potential of the Trojans defense, Cobb said there was no limit to what he and the group could do.
“I wouldn’t really put a ceiling on these guys,” Cobb said after the Spring Game. “I wouldn’t put a ceiling on any of these guys. There’s a lot of room for improvement. Since I got here, from the first spring break to the last, it’s a whole different defense. A lot more confidence.”
Cobb arrived in Los Angeles after three seasons with the Cowboys. His first two years were spent as a reserve before breaking out as a starter and star as a junior.
He was named to the All-Big-12 second team after notching 96 tackles and 13 tackles for loss on the season. Cobb also tallied 11 quarterback hurries and an interception as Oklahoma State finished the season with a 7-6 record.

Lincoln Riley highlighted Mason Cobb as an impact transfer
USC head coach Lincoln Riley dipped into the portal this winter to help bolster his squad and he seems to be happy with the results.
After the Spring Game last weekend, he named a few different transfers who have stood out amongst the group.
“A great group of character guys,” Riley said. “Certainly, (MarShawn Lloyd‘s) added a lot to the backfield. Dorian (Singer) has been tremendous in the receiver room. Christian Roland; we’ve really been pleased with him and how he’s adapted. Mason Cobb has had a huge impact on our spring, without a doubt. You feel it when he’s on the field. So, there’s just more talent; there’s more competition. Every one of those skill spots across the board, you got to be able to play. But they’re making each other better, and they’re creating a lot of competition, which is very healthy.”
In total, Riley said he was pleased with the group and believes not only the right players but the right people, too.
The Trojans are the No. 4 team in On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings. Cobb was the No. 8 linebacker in the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3.
USC has 12 new transfers on its 2023 roster so far for the upcoming season.
