The nation’s No. 1 running back — Rueben Owens of El Campo, Texas — is heading to Los Angeles this weekend for some 7-on-7 work and an unofficial visit to USC.

Owens was reportedly planning on visiting Alabama for the Crimson Tide’s junior day weekend. But he said on Tuesday in a social media post that he’ll instead be in LA. The Trojans are expected to host Owens for a junior day event.

Rueben Owens is the No. 25 player in the country and the top running back recruit, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. On3 ranks Owens as the No. 46 player overall, the second-ranked running back and the seventh-best player in the Lone Star State.

Rueben Owens has more than 40 offers

The battle to land Rueben Owens is one of the most intense in the country.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Texas A&M Aggies are listed as the team to beat slightly over the Texas Longhorns. The Aggies have a 32.4% chance of landing Owens, while Texas is at 31.9%. Georgia is next at 16.4%, and USC is listed with a 5.7% chance.

The latest intel from On3’s Sam Spiegelman says Rueben Owens is maintaining an “open” approach to his recruitment.

“However, he’s continued to make visits back to Texas and Texas A&M consistently and Georgia, Alabama and LSU have been favorite out-of-state destinations,” Spiegelman said.

“There’s plenty of time to go in Owens’ recruitment, but there’s a sense Owens winds up in-state. The one-time Longhorns commitment was certainly leaning toward Texas A&M during the season. There’s also optimism on The Forty Acres about Owens eventually making his way back into the class.”

On3’s Inside Texas reports that Owens is set to visit Austin again on March 26.

The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder and 2021 Texas Sportswriters Association Class 4A co-offensive player of the year had a banner junior season. He tallied 2,989 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns on 248 rushes to go with another 252 yards and one receiving score for El Campo High.
