USC announces former All-American lineman Booker Brown, 69, passed away
The USC football program announced the death of former national championship-winning offensive lineman Booker Brown on Thursday. Brown died on July 18 of natural causes, according to the Trojans. He was 69 years old.
Born in Wesson, Mississippi, the offensive lineman initially started his collegiate career at Santa Barbara City College. He later joined the Trojans, winning a title in 1972 and earning a consensus All-American honor in 1973. USC finished eighth in the final AP poll that year. Brown played in the 1973 and 1974 Rose Bowls during his time with the Trojans and won the team’s top lineman award in 1973 as well.
Former USC head coach John McKay once said of Brown: “He’s the widest athlete I’ve ever seen. We’ll put a helmet on each of his shoulders and have him play both tackle and guard.”
After his time in Los Angeles, he entered the draft, going in the sixth round in 1974 to the Houston Oilers. He also played for the Chargers from 1975-77, as well as in the World Football League.
