The USC Trojans absolutely throttled the Rice Owls in their Week 1 matchup, 66-14 and kicked off the Lincoln Riley era in grand fashion. The devastatingly dominant performance sent a message across the college football landscape that the Trojans expect to be a force to be reckoned with this season. USC had three pick-sixes in their blowout victory, tying the school record the Trojans set in 1982. The 66 points scored by USC were the most points the program has put on the scoreboard in over a decade, since October of 2008.

For their Week 2 matchup, the Trojans will face off against the Stanford Cardinal in their Pac-12 season opener. The Cardinal feature a gifted quarterback in Tanner McKee.

McKee made his way onto several NFL mock draft boards over the summer, including PFF’s Michael Renner. Renner ranked Stanford’s quarterback as a top 20 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Against Colgate in Week 1, he completed 22 of his 27 passing attempts for 308 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns and just one interception. He’s the latest great quarterback climbing up the ranks at Stanford, as the school just recently produced Davis Mills, who now starts for the Houston Texans. Of course, the school also produced Cardinal legend Andrew Luck, who was forced into early retirement due to playing behind an atrocious offensive line with the Colts.

Another player that USC will have to worry about on Stanford’s offense is a player with a very famous father. Running back, E.J. Smith, the son of Hall-of-Fame running back Emmitt Smith. Last week, he had a breakout performance against Colgate, racking up 118 rushing yards on 11 carries (10.7 yards per carry) and two touchdowns on the ground.

Stanford will have their hands full with a loaded USC roster

USC simply dominated Rice last weekend in every way, shape, and form. Their star quarterback, Caleb Williams, looked great in his debut game for the Trojans, completing 19 of 22 pass attempts for 249 passing yards, while tossing two touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also added 68 rushing yards on the ground on just six carries, showcasing exactly why he’s been one of the nation’s most coveted football prospects ever since his high school days for Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.).
