USC EDGE Sam Greene plans to enter NCAA transfer portal
USC EDGE Sam Greene plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Greene appeared in all 12 games this season for USC after taking a redshirt in 2023 as a freshman. He totaled 15 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack.
Greene turned in one of his biggest games against Rutgers. That night, he had three tackles, two for loss and a sack to lead USC to the victory.

Greene was a key part of an improved USC defense this year under new coordinator D’Anton Lynn. The Trojans went from allowing 432.8 yards per game in 2023 to 371.6 yards, and the scoring defense saw a major improvement. In 2023, USC gave up 34.4 points per game, and that number dropped to 23.5 points this year as the Trojans made the move to the Big Ten.
However, the defensive staff is preparing for a departure. Linebackers coach Matt Entz is preparing to take over as the head coach at Fresno State, and Lincoln Riley addressed the move earlier this week.
“It didn’t get finalized until here this morning,” Riley said. “It was one of those situations that came together pretty quickly and so I don’t know if it’s fair to say that it did or didn’t complicate things (with National Signing Day). I mean, that’s, in this world, it’s just kinda part of it. When you have a really good staff, you got really quality people on your staff, you’re gonna have guys that get opportunities and move on. And I think we’re happy for Coach Entz, first. College football head-coaching jobs are really, really hard to get, and I think it’s always a sign of a healthy program when programs are wanting to come in and hire your people, particularly, in head-coaching roles.”
