Coaches are out on the recruiting trail in January, and the staff at USC is no exception. Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley visited Shaker Heights (Ohio) 2025 four-star cornerback Trey McNutt on Wednesday.

McNutt is the nation’s No. 35 overall prospect and No. 5 cornerback in the 2025 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 2 recruit in Ohio.

McNutt was offered by USC last spring and spoke with WeAreSC. He also visited Los Angeles the weekend of May 21.

“Man this feels great, this is a big offer especially it being my first one from the West Coast,” McNutt told WeAreSC.

Carrollton (Ga.) five-star quarterback Julian Lewis is USC’s lone 2025 commitment after reclassifying from 2026. He’s the No. 10 overall prospect and No. 2 quarterback in the On3 Industry Ranking.

“At the end of the day, it is about what Coach Riley does with quarterbacks,” Lewis told On3 about his commitment in August. “Coach Riley develops quarterbacks, he really knows how to manage the room and he knows how to feature guys at that position. The track record he has with quarterbacks really made a big difference in my recruitment.”

McNutt visited Ohio State last weekend

McNutt took a major in-state visit this past weekend, heading two hours southwest to Ohio State. He told On3 that the Buckeyes made him feel like a priority.

“This whole visit, they made sure that I felt like I was their priority,” McNutt told On3 on Sunday. “Coach Walt was with us for a good amount of time, too, and we were just talking and they were giving off great energy. They all let me know that they want me over there.”

Since arriving back in Columbus, Ohio State’s new safeties coach Matt Guerrieri has wasted little time getting more familiar with McNutt.

“I really enjoyed talking with the coaches in person again,” McNutt said.

“Coach Guerrieri had come to my school earlier in the week and had been putting in a great effort in recruiting me,” he added. “Coach G has given me a great first impression, especially as a person. I can tell he takes relationships very seriously and wants to know me as a person as well. He has emphasized how much they want me to land at Ohio State.”
