USC linebacker Eric Gentry announces he will redshirt, ending 2024 season
USC will be without one of its defensive stars for the rest of the 2024 campaign, as linebacker Eric Gentry has announced he will redshirt the rest of the year.
Gentry had suffered multiple concussions early in the year, struggling to stay on the field.
Even so, through four games played he had recorded 30 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a quarterback hurry and a pass breakup. His loss will be a significant one for the Trojans, who are reeling after a tough loss to Penn State.
“It breaks my heart that I share with you all my decision to redshirt for the remainder of the season due to a series of concussions in a short period of time,” Eric Gentry wrote. “This decision has not been easy, but after thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family and the coaching staff, I know it’s the right choice for my well-being and long-term health.”
The talented USC linebacker has been contributing for the Trojans for three years after transferring in from Arizona State.
He has logged 98 tackles, 14.5 tackles for a loss, 5.0 sacks, four forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions, 10 passes defended and a blocked kick in three seasons.

And though other players have opted to redshirt this season for NIL or other reasons, Eric Gentry offered some clarification on his reasoning.
“I want to make it clear that this decision has absolutely nothing to do with my playing time or NIL opportunities,” Gentry wrote. “My love for this team, this program, and all of you is unwavering. I give it my all on the field thanks to Allah SWT, and I will continue to support my teammates and the Trojans in every way I can as I focus on getting back to full health. Thank you for all your support, and I look forward to coming back stronger than ever inshallah.”
Prior to enrolling at Arizona State in 2021, Eric Gentry was a three-star prospect and the No. 453 overall recruit in the 2021 class. He was ranked as the No. 45 linebacker and the No. 15 overall player from the state of Pennsylvania, hailing from Philadelphia (PA) Neumann Goretti.
