Caleb Williams reveals how he moves forward with playoff chances slim
USC suffered their second straight loss of the season last weekend following 6-0 start to the year, losing 34-32 to a Utah team that’s seemingly been their kryptonite as of late falling to the Utes for the third time in two seasons.
Two losses for the Trojans severely hurts their chances of making the College Football Playoff this year, as the team now sits at the No. 24 spot in the AP Top 25 Poll after being ranked as high as No. 5 earlier this season.
Helping lead his team to a national championship was a goal of USC quarterback Caleb Williams, and now that achieving that goal is seemingly out of reach, Williams spoke on his mindset moving forward this season.
“We’re halfway through the season and you don’t necessarily know what’s gonna happen,” Williams said. “You’ve seen a of ranked teams lose, you’ve seen a lot of close games with ranked teams, and right now there’s a lot of one-loss teams and not so many lossless teams. You keep going, you keep fighting.”
Williams is staying optimistic, but there’s no question that a lot of different dominos would need to fall in favor of the Trojans for their College Football hopes to be reignited. Not to mention taking care of their own business as well, facing three ranked opponents in their final four games of the regular season.

Thankfully they get a brief break from ranked competition this weekend after facing and losing to ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks as they visit Cal this Saturday. And while this weekend’s matchup with the Golden Bears may not impact their College Football Playoff chances, Williams and the Trojans plan on putting their heads down and working, staying ready for whatever postseason opportunity will preset itself down the road.
“You stay out here, extra time, be with your guys because you never know when the opportunity’s gonna come. When the opportunity comes you want to be able to seize that opportunity,” Williams said. “So we’re gonna keep going, keep fighting on, and keep trying to reach our goals.”
With USC out of the playoff race and Williams destined to likely be the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft, there were some who felt like he should sit out for the remainder of the season in order to protect his draft stock. It could be argued that sitting out with four games remaining in the season could also hurt his perception in the eyes of NFL evaluators, but it seems clear that Williams will be under center for the Trojans moving forward this regular season.
