USC shooting guard Wesley Yates entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Joe Tipton confirmed. He spent one season with the Trojans.

Yates started his career at Washington, but played just one season for the Huskies. He transferred to USC to play under Eric Musselman this past year.

In 2024-25, Yates played in 33 games. He averaged 14.1 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game, 1.8 assists per game, shot 47.8% from the floor and 43.9% from three-point range.

As a member of the Class of 2023, Yates was a four-star recruit out of Beaumont (Texas) United, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 3 overall prospect in the state, the No. 12 shooting guard in the class and the No. 50 overall prospect in the class.

Yates wasn’t the only USC guard to hit the transfer portal over the last week. Kevin Patton previously entered at the end of March.

Patton played high school basketball at Chandler (AZ) Rancho Christian, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 174 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

San Diego gaining a commitment and eventually the signature of Patton was a huge recruiting win. The true freshman instantly found a role, averaging 9.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Some team success was there too, finishing above .500 for the first time in four seasons.

Going to USC meant a step was going to need to be taken but Patton failed to reach the level. He made 27 appearances this past year and scored an average of 3.1 points per game. Patton did get into double figures on two occasions and both against Big Ten opponents — Maryland and Michigan.

Teams going after Patton will enjoy still seeing a high make percentage, shooting 56.1% from the field and just over 35% on three-point attempts. The qualities are still there for Patton, just needing to find a new level to unlock moving forward.
