Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham promoted Mike Bajakian to interim offensive coordinator, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

“Utah’s Kyle Whittingham has promoted Mike Bajakian to Interim offensive coordinator with Bajakian also serving as quarterbacks coach and the primary play-caller,” Feldman wrote on Twitter. “The former NFL assistant was OC and QB coach at Northwestern from 2019-23.”

This move comes on the heels of former Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig stepping down Sunday.

Whittingham provided a statement on the initial move.

“Assistant coach Andy Ludwig has made the decision to step down from his position with Utah Football,” Whittingham said. “Andy is the consummate professional and we want to thank him for his complete dedication to our program during his 10 total seasons with us.

“Coach Ludwig has been instrumental to our success here at Utah and personally, I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Andy as both a coach and a person. We wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors.”

Still, the program ranks just 95th nationally in scoring offense, notching 24.0 points per game. And that figure has slipped in recent weeks. Utah hasn’t scored more than 22 points in a game in the past four contests.

The team’s total offense ranks 72nd nationally (385.9 yards per game), while the rushing offense ranks 66th (159.6 yards per game) and the passing offense ranks 71st (226.3 yards per game). But the team’s passing efficiency checks in at just 100th.

Cam Rising battled injuries at quarterback and freshman Isaac Wilson’s been hit or miss as far as the most important position at Utah goes. Now the program will attempt to adjust on the fly with a new set of voices in charge of the offense.

Utah returns to action on Saturday at Houston in a game that kicks off at 7 p.m. ET.
