3-star 2022 athlete B.J. Diakite backs off Vanderbilt commitment

Fresh off a trip to Georgia Tech, Pinson (Ala.) Pinson Valley athlete B.J. Diakite decommitted from Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

Diakite is a three-star prospect and the No. 58 athlete in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He had been committed to the Commodores since March.

In announcing his decision, Diakite wrote on Twitter: “I always knew from a young age that if I worked my dream of playing college football would come true. It has been rewarding to have coaches from colleges recognizing my hard work. I am thankful for all the coaches at Vandy that took time to recruit me and offer me a scholarship. During the last few months I have given my recruitment a lot of thought and I want to be sure I am making the best decision for me and my family and everything I want to become. I am announcing my de-commitment from Vanderbilt and opening my recruitment.”

The 6-foot-4, 212-pounder visited Georgia Tech last weekend with his teammate, four-star Yellowjackets quarterback commit Zach Pyron. His decommitment was the second in as many days for Vanderbilt, who lost three-star cornerback Caleb Coley on Monday. The Commodores now have 16 players committed for the 2022 cycle, and their class currently ranks last in the 14-team SEC.
