3-star quarterback Reese Mooney decommits from Vanderbilt
After pledging to Vanderbilt in November, Denham Springs (La.) quarterback Reese Mooney has decommitted from the Commodores. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder announced his decision on social media and will reopen his recruitment process.
“First off, I want to thank Vanderbilt and all of its coaches, especially Coach Lynch, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a great university,” Mooney wrote. “They are first class all around there. But after lots of discussion with my family and my coaches I have decided it is best for myself and family that I reopen my recruitment process.”
Mooney, the No. 38 quarterback in the On3 Consensus rankings, picked Vandy over over Georgia Tech, Miami, and West Virginia the first time.
“I visited twice in the summer and I felt it deep down then,” he told On3’s Chad Simmons. “Then I went to a game this year and it just hit me. This is the place. I wanna be a part of the change at Vanderbilt.”

Reese Mooney was expected to take an official visit to Vanderbilt in June, but will now weigh all of his options moving forward. Vanderbilt doesn’t currently have another quarterback committed, and two of its top targets — Marcel Reed and Kenny Minchey have pledged to Ole Miss and Pittsburgh, respectively.
Mooney was at one time committed to Houston to play baseball. He pledged to the program in November 2019 as a freshman in high school. And he stayed committed to the program for over a year. During that time, he shot up onto the radars of college football programs across the country and felt it was in his best interest to decommit in April 2021.
