Vanderbilt fined $250k due to fans storming the court following upset win over Tennessee
The Vanderbilt Commodores stunned their in-state rivals, the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers earlier this week, handing them a 66-65 loss, thanks to the dagger of a three-pointer that was delivered at the buzzer by Tyrin Lawrence. Following the victory, pandemonium ensured on the Commodores’ home floor, and fans stormed the court.
The school heard on Friday from the SEC league office, which issued them a $250,000 fine for their fourth violation of the league’s access to competition area policy, according to the press release issued by the SEC.
The fines levied against the schools for violation of access to competition area policy are deposited into the SEC Post Graduate Scholarship Fund, according to the press release.
The press release also explains the policy in-depth. It reads: “The policy states that “access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”
No matter what the policy is, it’s safe to say that Vanderbilt fans don’t care. Schools will keep paying the fines after big wins, regardless of what the price may be.

The SEC announced in November that a group is reviewing their policies on fans coming onto fields or courts with rules expected to be updated for the 2023-2024 season. The good news is the SEC Post Graduate Scholarship Fund has likely grown in a big way the past few years.
Commodores’ guard Tyrin Lawrence carried Vanderbilt in the upset victory with 19 points, four rebounds, and one assist.
With the win, Vanderbilt improved to 12-12 overall this season. The loss dropped Tennessee to 19-5 overall. The win over Tennessee was the first in nearly six years for Vanderbilt.
